Lush Thick Braided Ponytail Hairstyle

Lush Thick Braided Ponytail HairstyleThink ponytails are for schoolgirls? Think again! Not only can ponytails be worn by fully grow fashion consious women, they can also be made to look fabulous enough for an evening out!

This style is stunning, and even though it’s just a ponytail, it is clearly not a classroom hairstyle. It is full of drama and would not be out of place on a red carpet somewhere. If you would like to wear it during the day, adjust the height of the ponytail having it start a little lower for a less dramatic daytime look.

With the right accessories and make up, a sleek pulled back ponytail can be a fashion statement on it’s own. Of course severe pulled back styles do not suit every face shape so I will show you how you can make it work for most people.

Here’s how to achieve it:

  • Brush all your hair up and away from your face using a soft boar bristle brush. Apply a little water or gel to the sides and back to get a very neat finish.
  • Tie your hair into a very high ponytail at the very top of your head.
  • If you are not blessed with particularly thick locks you will need to wrap your own hair in a bun and attach a ponytail hairpiece.
  • Alternatively wrap some wefted hair extensions around the base of your ponytail to add volume and length. Just make sure that the extensions match your own hair color and lustre. Yes wefted hair is not just for weaving!
  • Brush the ponytail to get rid of any tangles, you want the hair to be pretty smooth before beginning.
  • Apply a bit of volumizing mousse over the ponytail, this will allow the braid to hold it’s shape even when loosened.
  • Divide the ponytail into three sections and braid down the entire length. Do not braid too tight.
  • Once you are approximately 4 inches from the ends, stop braiding and secure with a rubber band. Section off a very small piece of hair from the ends and use this to wrap around the rubber band in order to hide it and tuck in the end into the braid.
  • Starting from the top of the braid, pull it apart gently to exaggerate the braid pattern, try to pull the pieces evenly so that you have equal volume throughout. Don’t’ loosen too much or else the braid will look sloppy.
  • Do this all the way down the length of the braid for maximum drama.
  • Spray the ponytail with a bit of hairspray to help it hold it’s shape.
  • Finish off the style by allowing the ponytail to lay over one shoulder. Gorgeous!

To make this style work for those with round, square or diamond shape faces, simply leave out some hair at the front and/or sides to soften the look. Adjust the height of your ponytail to suit your taste. If your face is long and thin then avoid having the ponytail too high as it will lengthen your face further, instead have the pony at the back of your head.

The ponytail itself will keep pretty well overnight, you will just have to re-smooth and brush the perimeter down again with a bit of water the following morning.
