How To Stop Color Treated Extensions from Fading

Woman having her hair colored at the hair salonYou took the plunge you decided to dye your extensions and they now look great, the perfect color for the season, and for your style. Now the trick is, how do you maintain the vibrancy of color treated hair as you style and manipulate your it daily? The challenge of color maintenance is always relevant whether the color is applied to your natural hair or your extensions. Here are four tips that you can use to maintain the vibrancy of your color treated hair extensions.

Tip 1:

Try to use products that are specifically formulated for color treated hair. There are conditioners and shampoo’s on the market that indicate ‘for color treated hair’ and they tend not to have drying or stripping agents in the formulation to help keep the hair moisturized and less prone to fading. Avoid shampoos that are heavy laden with sulfates because while they are great cleaning agents they are famous for stripping the hair which will eventually include the color you worked so hard to put in. Another suggestion would be to up your deep conditioning game on your extensions. The more often you deep condition the less likely the hair will dry out and the more vibrant your color will look

Tip 2:

Don’t do too much at once- If you color didn’t come out quite right you may be tempted to bleach and re apply color of just re-dye your hair but this can be detrimental to your extensions as bleaching and re-dyeing can strip away layers of the strands damaging the hair much like your own natural hair. Many of us may think that because they are extensions that they can handle much more processing than our own hair. However the truth is human hair extensions are made to move and behave just your natural hair would which means that they can be just as easily damaged. If the color isn’t rich enough it probably better to use a high quality permanent color the first time around to ensure that your hair comes out just right. Test the hair prior to doing your entire head to make sure you get what you want.

Tip 3:

Make sure your hair extensions are up to par when applying color. By this I mean if you have purchased high quality extensions also made sure that you have the best color for your hair then the combination should allow for vibrant color that doesn’t fade or look dull. If fading occurs chances are either one out of the two are deficient, either the quality of your extensions have diminished and need to be replaced or the color isn’t as great as you may have thought.

Tip 4:

Chemical treatments such as touch ups on the roots of your natural hair for color that has grown out, should never be conducted while extensions are still in your hair, despite the method used to place them in your hair. It is almost always better to have them removed first, do what you need to do to your natural hair and then put them back in. This ensures that your get the right color and texture matched perfectly anyway.
