Buns are a great protective style but apart from their healthy hair credentials, buns look absolutely fabulous too. A sleek bun is particularly beautiful because you can go two ways with the style. You can dress it down for the office or other daytime activities, or you can seriously dress it up for a super formal event like a wedding.
Here are two ways with a high doughnut bun:
You will need: A large doughnut bun ring & bobby pins
Dressed Down Bun
- Begin by brushing your hair into a high ponytail. If you have a bang, brush it to the side so that it swoops across your forehead. You may want to use some holding gel and a soft boar bristle brush to help with the smoothing.
- If your hair is not long enough to create a bun attach a ponytail hairpiece or wrap some long hair extension wefts around your ponytail securing with bobby pins as you go along.
- Thread the hair through the doughnut ring hole and place the doughnut at the base of the ponytail.
- If your hair is very straight, you may want to add some curls to the hair with a large barrel curling iron to help with forming the bun.
- Brush the hair around the doughnut covering it completely. Brush the excess hair under the doughnut ring and secure in place with bobby pins.
- Spray lightly with some oil sheen to finish the style.
A dressed up bun can be a simple elegant updo for a formal occasion like a wedding. Not all brides want to spend hours in the stylist’s seat on their big day so by opting for a simple bun, you can be out in less than an hour but still look absolutely stunning!
- Create your bun as above and spray with some oil sheen.
- To dress it up, wrap a piece of ribbon around your head, close to the base of the bun. Secure the ribbon with a couple of bobby pins strategically placed so that they are not visible. This will stop the ribbon from slipping.
- Create an elaborate or simple bow with the ends of the ribbon. Make sure that the bow is on the opposite side to your swoop bang to balance out the style.
- Attach a few flower clips to the body of the bun to add interest.
- You can then attach a veil underneath the bun at the back or you can forgoe the ribbon and add a tiara at the front instead.
Another reason why buns win the protective style stakes is because they can keep for a whole week with very little manipulation.
At night, all you have to do is wrap the perimeter of your head down with a silk scarf, this is to keep the edges neat and the frizzes at bay. It’s not necessary to cover the bun itself with a scarf but you can certainly do this for added protection.
In the morning, take down the scarf, brush down any stray hairs and you are good to go!
