How To Get Cascading Curls With Clip-In Extensions

Caruso Steam Rollers on Clip-In ExtensionsMany ladies opt to use direct heat when styling clip in extensions, and if that is what you choose, great! But there are other heat free ways to style your clip ins that create the same effect and blend your hair very well for a beautiful finish without subjecting your hair to the damaging effects of heat.

For this look mainly 18” (with a couple 14” near the front on the sides) Virgin Indian Remy hair clip in extensions were used.  The only other tools you need are a wide tooth comb and a set of steam rollers, I used the Caruso steam roller set but there are other brands.  Prepare your real hair, be sure it is well moisturized and straightened.  Once you have the clip in extensions installed, you are ready to create the style.

Fill the reservoir for your steam rollers with water, plug in the unit and wait until the steam begins to percolate.

Starting near the back again, part with your fingers (do NOT use a comb as you may accidentally disturb one of the clips) horizontally a section of hair.  I suggest the section below and just above the extension, sort of sandwiching the faux hair for the most undetectable finish. Clip the rest of the hair up and out of the way.

Place a medium sized roller on the base.  Your first inclination may be to grab the large or jumbo size, thinking medium will give you tight ringlets, but just the opposite.  The medium sized roller gives you a defined cascading curl while the larger sizes are more for body and volume with a slight curl.  Allow the roller to sit on the base for about ten seconds.  If you leave it on the base too long the sponge of the roller will be damp and your curls won’t be as springy.

Take about a two inch section of hair, smooth with your fingers, then place the roller in the middle of the length.  Spiral the lower hair around the roller and then rotate the entire roller upward to the scalp, allowing the hair above the roller to wrap around the spiraled hair (see video for demonstration).

The spiraled section will create the cascading curl while rolling the top portion secures the bottom hair on the roller.  This technique creates beautiful curls without being too tight and big near the root.  Continue until you reach the very front section of your hair.

In the front decide if you want curls flipped away from your face in a Farrah Fawcett type of look or towards your face as I did in the photos.  If you are going for the flipped look, place the roller on TOP of the hair and spiral the lower section around going backwards.  If you want the curls to be more of a feathered look towards your face, place the roller beneath the hair and spiral on top of the roller.  To see a visual demonstration, again please see the video.

Allow the rollers to set for about twenty minutes then remove.  As you remove unspiral the roller to leave the curl undisturbed.

Run your fingers gently through the curls a few times, not too much or the curls will either frizz or fall.  Concentrate on separating near the roots to be sure your real hair covers the wefts of the clip in extensions.  If you want to be sure the curls last as is, apply a soft holding hair spray.  Otherwise, you are ready to go and the curls will fall naturally and at the end of a long day will become more of a soft wavy look.
