We all want to look fabulous on a special occasion or just an evening out with our significant other. If the occasion if formal you will want an elegant hairstyle that enhances your features without looking too severe. Once your hair is sorted, all you have to do is spend a couple of hours with your girlfriends trying to find the ‘perfect’ dress!
Face shape among other things should play a huge role when deciding which updo variation you should choose. Here are a few things to consider before embarking on you updo:
- Ensure that you already have all the equipment necessary for creating the look. Some looks require just bobby pins while some will require special grippers that hold the hair in a way that cannot be recreated with other tools.
- Hair length should be a consideration when picking an updo. Some styles are suitable for short hair but would not work so well with long locks. Similarly some styles can only be recreated with long hair or with the addition of hair extensions.
- Round, square, and diamond shaped faces should stay away from severe, all hair pulled back updo’s. They are unflattering and and bring to attention the features that you should be playing down. Tendrils that fall around the face and jaw or a soft bang should be included with updo’s to soften the look.
- Make sure that you have good products to help you create the style. Updo’s tend to require setting lotions, curling spritz or holding sprays to make the style last so ensure that you have those before begining.
- If push comes to shove, you can get some really nice looking hair pieces from beauty supply stores. After you have picked one that matches your hair color, all you need to do is pull your hair into a bun and attach the hairpiece to create your style. Simple but very effective.
Here is an easy way to create an elegant updo for short to medium length hair.
1. If you are wearing hair extensions ensure that you left hair out around the perimeter to cover the tracks. Apply some heat protectant over your hair and comb through to evenly distribute.
2. Using a thin hair elastic, comb your hair into a high or medium high ponytail. This is where your bun will sit.
3. Pull out some strands of hair around your hairline to frame your face. You can release some hair at the nape as well if desired.
4. Heat up a barrel curler. Tip: A smaller curler will create more defined curls while a larger one will give you large less defined ones.
5. Curl the hair in small sections pinning up each curl with a bobby pin as you go. Place the bobby pins strategically so that it holds up the curls but cannot be seen.
6. Once you have completed curling the hair, you should be left with a curly bun. Adjust the placement of curls around the bun to your satisfaction.
7. Spray lightly with some oil sheen spray and a medium hold hairspray. You can accessorize this with some sparkly clips for an extra special event and you are ready to dazzle!
Tip: You can also do this style heat free. The night before create the ponytail then wrap strands of your hair around some flexi rods. To style, remove the flexi rods and pin each curl up as above to create the curly bun.
