Yes, white women sometimes want some help with enhancing their hair. If you have thin hair, extensions are a great way to add some length and volume to your own locks. You may be surprised to hear that Vanessa Hudgens dabbles in hair extensions adding some long dark wavy tresses to compliment her own. Her style rocks though!
If you are trying to incorporate more protective styling into your hair regimen, here’s how to recreate her look without leaving too much hair out.
Hair needed: 1 pack of 18 inch and 1 pack of 20 inch straight Virgin Indian Hair in black. Choose hand tied wefts because they are thinner and will give you a flatter weave.
1. Cornrow you hair straight back. Leave only a 1 inch section of hair at the top for covering the tracks. Don’t braid the baby hair around your hairline to prevent traction alopecia and you don’t need to leave any hair out at the hairline for this style. Use a net for the weave as it will help with track placement and give you a much flatter style.
2. Sew the 20 inch hair starting at the nape. This is a very low volume hairstyle so don’t sew in too much at the back because you might run out of hair before you get to the front! The 18 inch can be installed at the top and if you use hand tied wefts, you will be able to sew them in pretty close to your leave out hair without any unsightly bulkiness
3. Get creative with your track placement. If you have used a weaving net then you can also place a track pretty close to the hairline on either side of the part. This track should be installed facing forward. Since you will not be leaving any hair out, you want to disguise the fact that you are wearing a weave even when the wind blows your hair away from your face!
4. Once the extensions are installed, apply some heat protectant on the inch of hair that you left out and flat iron it smooth and straight to blend. Divide the section into two and use the hair to cover the tracks.
5. Spray some heat protectant over the length of the hair extensions and brush to evenly distribute.
6. Part a section of hair at the nape and clip the rest of the hair away. Heat up a large barrel curling iron or a curved flat iron. Starting half way up the extensions, create some very loose curls and alllow them to drop while still hot. The weight of the hair extensions will turn them into waves. Don’t use any other product in the hair to avoid coating it.
7. Repeat this process with the rest of the hair and brush through with a paddle brush.
8. Spray the waves lightly with some hairspray. Don’t overdo the hairspray as you don’t want your extensions to go crunchy.
To keep the style, pull your hair into a low ponytail and tie with a hair elastic. Twist your hair into a loose bun and secure with another hair elastic. Cover with a satin bonnet or silk scarf for the night. In the morning, release the bun and brush to style.
