Trimming Your Own Extensions – Conquer Those Split Ends!

Woman trimming her hair exensionsIt’s expensive being a woman, we love clothes, shoes, make up, beauty items and our crowning glory too. How your hair looks can dictate how you feel for the rest of the day, this is why we hate bad hair days so much!

To save money, you should learn to attend minor hair trims yourself and leave the larger jobs like coloring or major haircuts to the stylist. Heat styling, bleaching or excessive brushing causes split ends to form in your extensions and your hair will either look or feel rough to the touch. You will also notice that you are starting to have more tangling at the ends.

If you purchase good quality extensions, you obviously want them to last longer so rather than assume that they are ready for the bin, a trim may be all that they need to spruce them up for another install. It is way easier to trim your extensions when you are not wearing them but the methods below can also apply if you already have them installed!

Trimming is very easy to learn, here’s how:

You will need: A sharp pair of hair shears. Don’t use normal scissors as they will cause more damage to your hair. Shears are inexpensive and can be purchased from any beauty supply store.

When approaching trimming you can go about it in two ways. You can either do some light dusting of the ends or you can do an all round trim.

Dusting the ends

Dusting the ends refers to a very slight trim where you remove only about 1/4 inch of hair at the very ends.

  • It is best done is sections so grab a small section of hair and brush through to get rid of any tangles. Clip the rest of your hair out of the way.
  • Using a small tooth comb run it down close to the ends of the hair and use it as a guide to snip the small amount of hair off in a straight line.
  • Repeat this procedure with another section

As long as you catch the split ends before they have had a chance to take hold further up the strands, this light dusting is all you need to get rid of them and improve the look of your extensions. With dusting, you also have the added benefit of not losing too much length of your extensions!

Full Trim

Sometimes a dusting is just not enough and a full trim is in order. If your ends are really tangled then only a complete trim will remove them and restore your healthy ends.

If you are not wearing your extensions then follow the same process as above to trim them but cut off 1/2 inch to 1 inch of hair. Make sure that you cut at least 1/4 inch above the splits to ensure that your ends are blunt, full and healthy.

  • If you are already wearing your extensions then brush them thoroughly and tie all the hair into a low ponytail at the base of your head.
  • To see what you are doing you will need to bring your hair forward so running your hand down the length of the ponytail while holding quite firmly bring the ends towards the crown of your head.
  • You should be able to see the ends sticking up how so using your fingers as a guide, trim the desired length off in a straight line and you are done.

You can also watch this video for a demonstration of how to trim your ends in full if you happen to be wearing your extensions already. The lady in the video is trimming her own hair but the same process can be used for extensions too!
