How to Properly Care for Your Hair Extensions

April 25, 2016

Beautiful woman wearing hair extensionsDeciding to wear hair extensions is liberating in and of itself. Not only do you feel confident while doing it, but you also gotta’ rock the hair you’re wearing! But rockin’ a style is not the most important thing. Maintaining your hair style is key.  And the only way to do it is to properly care for your hair extensions so that they can last as long as possible and look great while wearing them.

Here Are 6 Ways to Care for & Sustain the Life of Your Hair Extensions:

1. If you’re wearing a glue-in or a tape-in hair extension, it’s best to choose a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner when you wash your hair. Sulfate-free products will protect the bonds on your hair extension so that they do not get damaged; ultimately destroying the extension.

2. Conditioning your hair extensions is very important as it keeps it looking shiny and keeps the hair feeling soft. However, always condition below the bonds to avoid damage at the root/weft area of your extensions. Only a light condition is necessary.

3. When you start your day, always use your fingers to lightly comb through your hair – especially if you’re wearing tighter curly hair extensions. However, if you’re wearing straight or wavy hair, it’s best to use a brush made of 100% boar hair. This ensures that the brush does not tear your hair from the weft. After all, you’ve invested some good money into purchasing it, so you’ll want to ensure that you exercise proper care for your hair’s overall maintenance.

4. When combing or brushing through your hair, always hold the hair with your other hand at the roots, as you brush or comb through your hair. This will ensure that you’re not loosening your extensions from the root. It will also ensure that single strands of your extension hair are not removed inadvertently.

5. Try not to get too much wind action on your extensions. Although some wind is ok and won’t damage your hair, too much (like fast driving on motorbike or in a convertible), will loosen the extensions and not make them last as long.

6. If you are wearing extensions in warm climate and are an active swimmer it’s best to wear a swim cap to avoid the chlorinated water. Chlorine water eats away at the hair extension bonds and this can ultimately damage your investment.

Wearing hair extensions does make it quite easy to sport a new style without an great deal of maintenance. If you’re purchasing your own hair and installing your extensions yourself or even if you’re having them installed by a trained hair stylist these rules apply equally well.

When you are getting your extensions professionally done, always make sure that the stylist has a good amount of experience backing her up. The last thing you want is an inexperienced stylist ruining your extensions! If you experience loosening of your extensions shortly after they are installed, make sure that you notify the stylist who installed them. This is an error on their part and it should be fixed at no cost to you.

Any professional stylist would be happy to make the adjustment with no questions asked.  After all, you’ve paid good money and already invested your time in having it done. It should be done right! Following these steps will ensure the life of your extensions, while keeping you happy and looking fabulous!
