3 Things you Need to Know Before You Get Hair Extensions (Part 1)

March 16, 2011

How many times have we caught ourselves gazing at celebs walking on the red carpet! Their shine and luxurious strands are to die for, right? Well, most of the times, at least! What’s amazing with these women is how quickly they can fashion long, beautiful hair after been seen with shoulder-grazing lobs a few days ago! No, it’s not their super genes. It’s Remy hair extensions that help them switch up their length whenever they feel they need a change. And, the great news is that we, humble mortals, can also achieve our own mane transformation! Before you get there, though, check out these tips!

1. Do your homework

The stylist you choose will play a huge role. They will help you get the ideal length and, if they are real experts, they’ll help you decide based on the shape of your face and hair texture. The final outcome should be natural to they need to know how to blend the Remy hair extensions with your own hair seamlessly.

You can start by asking the stylist you have in mind about the method(s) of extensions they’re trained in. Then, you should go over your lifestyle with them so they can have a picture of who you are and what you like before they make a suggestion about the type of extensions are best suited for the look you want to achieve.

Finally, ask for upkeep routine so you know what is needed and whether it’s something you can commit to.

2. Choose the Method According to your Hair Texture

The texture of your hair will determine whether you’ll have clip-ins, tape-ins or keratin-bonded. Of course, there are other methods, too, but these three are the ones most commonly used. In short, clip-ins are super easy to take on and off; hence, the less non-committal. Tape-ins include wide bonds and clamp your natural hair between them. Finally, the keratin-bonded method uses keratin bonds to fuse the virgin Remy hair extensions to your own hair with the help of either ultrasound technology or a small heat tool.

To make a wise decision, one must consider the health of their hair. If, for example, the hair is natural or relaxed from chemical procedures, then clip-in extensions – always using 100% non-chemically treated hair (Virgin Remy hair) – are an excellent option.

Now, if you like to change the way you wear your hair often or are active, then keratin-bonded will probably work best for you, given they are a much more flexible option than the other two and allow for hairstyles that range from braids to high-ponytails and everything in between.

3. Look for Quality

When you go out shopping, trying to get a bargain is good. But, not when it comes to purchasing hair extensions. This is one of those times when quality should come first, rather than the best price, because you’ll probably end up with hair that becomes dull and brittle after the first wash.

For best results, prefer top quality extensions, such as Indian Remy hair, because the hair’s cuticles are in the same direction, which means that it makes no difference than your natural hair and can hold volume, shape, and texture. Indian hair extensions also allow you to use a flat iron, color and curl it without any worries. Finally, it has almost no shedding, too, when you run your fingers through the extensions!
