Why Quick Weaves May Not Be The Best Thing For Your Hair

April 14, 2022

Scissors and multiple hair combsIf you don’t know what a quick weave is, it is essentially a weave that is glued onto a base created with your own hair. You relaxed hair is moulded into a wrap around your head using a sealing product that dries rock hard. Wefts are then glued directly on your dried hair to create the quick weave.

Here are some excellent reasons why you should dump the idea of a quick weave and try different methods of applying your extensions.

They are uncomfortable

If you scalp is not allowed to breath, bottom line is you will be uncomfortable. More importantly if you have an active lifestyle and work out every week chances are that your scalp will sweat and it will become hot and itchy. Imagine not being able to reach your scalp through the extensions to scratch! Sounds torturous!

They are not that quick

This is almost laughable! By the time you wrap your hair with the sealing product and wait for it to dry, a good braider could have cornrowed your hair to create a braiding pattern for the weave.

Sewing in a weave takes very little more time than gluing it in. If you have to close off your quick weave with the ‘invisible part’ method which is pretty time consuming, you may as well have gone with a sew in. This doesn’t even take into account the take down which is a tedious process for sure.

You can’t wash your hair

Yes, you can’t wash a quick weave because it would cause slippage. I don’t know about you but my hair has to be washed at least once a week or I would be climbing the walls with discomfort. Not only is it not great for your own hair, it could encourage fungal infections on your scalp which would cause stunted hair growth.

The sealing products and glue cause damage

In spite of what the manufactures of sealing products say, quick weaves are damaging to your hair in the long run. Would you purposely apply glue your hair? Most sealing products are based on glue and hardening gels, it’s how they can keep your hair together and harden it!

Further to this, glue is not great for your hair extensions. It’s difficult and time consuming to remove and almost always leaves a film behind anyway. If you are investing in good quality virgin Indian hair, the last thing you want to do is ruin them with glue right?

They are unnatural looking

Nobody is fooled by ‘invisible parts’ regardless how meticulously they are applied. You may get out of the stylist’s chair looking a million dollars but by the end of the week, something will have slipped and that part will start looking off somehow. Showing your own scalp with a bit of your own hair left out gives the most natural looking weave. A close second is using lace closures or frontals. Anything else is just a poor relation.

They are not healthy for your hair

This is perhaps the most important point. I don’t know anyone who has managed to grow their hair very long and healthy while using quick weaves. But I do know plenty of women who have grown their hair out using sew in’s! Look, any style that doesn’t allow your hair to breathe isn’t going to be popular with the healthy hair crowd. That should tell you all you need to know if your ultimate goal is long hair of your own.

There are so many other methods that are better than quick weaves there is little point in bothering with them. Give me needle and thread for a sew in any day!
