What Kind Of Weave Wearer Are You? Part 2

January 7, 2016

Woman with brown extensions in asymetrical poseIn the first article I looked at a few types of weave wearers and how it affected their chances of growing long healthy hair of their own. Here I continue with more weave wearers.

The two week weave wearer

You enjoy wearing weaves but you get bored very easily. By the end of the first week of the new install you are already getting itchy fingers and want to have your own hair out again or you want to try yet another texture weave. You probably self install so you don’t think that it’s a big deal since you are not speding anything on the installation but you can’t understand why your own hair isn’t growing.

Advice: You are not giving your own hair enough time to grow! Excessive manipulation is the main cause of breakage especially in African American hair so to reduce it you must reduce manipulation. Rather than change the texture of your weave every couple of weeks, why not try a roller set, perm rod set or hair straighteners to alter the texture of the weave you currently have on so that you can keep it in for longer. Aim to keep it in for a month at the minimum and 2 months at the maximum before removing the install to look after you own hair for a while. Develop a good low manipulation hair regimen and your length retention will improve.

The ‘Get my money’s worth’ weave wearer

When you get a weave you do things right by buying good extension hair and getting an excellent stylist to install it for you. The only thing is that you never feel that you have got your money’s worth and you wear the weave continuously for more than 2 months. You have been known to use the bobby pin trick to adjust a loosened track!

Advice: While we all want to get our money’s worth it’s never a good idea to wear a weave for over two months especially if your own hair grows in kinky curly. Very curly hair is prone to tangling and matting and in your pursuit of getting more wear out of your weave you may find that when you do eventually take it down, you will be left with tangles in your own hair that only a pair scissors can fix.

Learn to self install to cut the cost of a new weave but whatever you do remove that weave after two months to get your own hair thoroughly washed and detangled. With a good regimen, eventually you will find that the length of your own hair rivals the weave!

The part time weave wearer

You are the ideal weave wearer. You wear a weave not because you need to but because you want to! You either want to protect your own hair from excessive manipulation or you want a break from your own hair (we’ve all been there). You like weaves because you are able to experiment with different colors and textures without permanently altering your own hair.

You take your weave down every 4-6 weeks and wear your own hair out for a month or two before contemplating your next install. You have an excellent hair regimen that is allowing you to retain majority of your length and you enjoy wearing your hair out every bit as much as you enjoy your extensions.

Advice: None, carry on. You are obviously using extensions to compliment you regimen so length retention in your own hair is effortless.
