Is There Such A Thing As A Hair Extension Addiction?

October 19, 2013

Woman brushing her hair in front of a mirrorWe all know that in places like Hollywood, hair extensions are very common. It is a trend that has transcended into the streets and homes of everyday people. However, for celebrities it’s often times done for a film role that requires them to alter their hair to suit their character. However, then there are those who do it for beauty reasons. And when common folk like us see these glorious extensions on our favorite celebs; we too want to attain that look as well. Hey, why not right!

From celebrities to models to students and mothers; everyone seems to want to purchase hair extensions and rightfully so, since they are so readily available! In the same way that cosmetic surgery is a common trend across many different people from different walks of life; so too is the desire for hair extensions.

This popularity has somewhat transformed itself into a beauty craze that cannot be ignored. In fact, there are some people who admit they do not really need hair extensions, yet they purchase them anyway simply because they want a completely new look using extension hair that they adore.  If the hair is available and you can afford it, why not right?

Like other fads, the hair extension craze is the result of a yearning to look more attractive. Everyone wants to be attractive, so why not do what it takes to fulfill this objective? Although it’s not always for cosmetic reasons, for those who purchase hair extensions for vanity, their reasons may vary.

Some women choose to do so simply because they are impatient waiting for their hair to grow and want instant gratification. Then there are those who want a particular texture, style or length of hair that is not possible with their own hair, so they turn to hair extensions to reach this desired goal. While this is a perfectly reasonable desire, it is possible to take the purchasing of hair extensions to an unhealthy level – and this level is the level of addiction.

When an individual decides to change his or her hair extensions excessively, it becomes an addiction. As we all know, hair extensions are not meant to last forever. Some will last for several months if properly cared for, but sooner or later, they must be removed.

A hair extension addict will not feel comfortable without hair extensions. They will feel inadequate, self conscious and very uncomfortable when they are not wearing them. There are those who will even give up life necessities just to purchase their hair extensions.

Some hair addiction stories are of those where women have chosen forfeit eating, paying their mortgage or essential bills all in the name of their hair! When this happens, it is true to say that this hair fascination has become a problem.

Then there are also some hair extension addicts who insist on purchasing hair extension replacements simply because of the release of a new style that they feel they must have. Although this is not as extreme, this type of behavior may signal a problem that needs some attention. An addict may be persistent about trying the newest style, even if he or she has just purchased a new set of hair extensions a week earlier. In all of these cases, these women need their fix and hair is it!

Although there are less expensive synthetic hair extensions, many addicts have chosen to take the more “natural” route. They want to only purchase human hair extensions simply because they feel more real – as though the hair is growing from their own scalp. It’s the soft feel and the look of the hair that continues to feed their addiction. Although human hair extensions can range anywhere from $400 and can cost as much as $1000, cost is no issue for some women. It’s a must have for some and for those selling the hair it’s worth it simply because it’s high in demand!

People addicted to hair extensions spend exorbitant amounts of money that could have been saved or spent elsewhere on more important things. It is a known fact that people who cannot function comfortably without hair extensions are suffering from an addiction, and they may need outside support stop the habit.

However, although a hair extension addiction may be expensive and unhealthy, addicts are not committing a crime by continuing their habit. In the end, as long as the love of extensions is not getting in the way of daily routines and not taking over ones financial state to the extreme, it is up to the “addict” to decide how to handle their situation. In the end if they are happy and everyone around them is happy too, there is no harm in it now is there?
