Clip-in and Semi-Permanent Extensions: What you Need to Know

October 19, 2018

If you have thin or thinning hair that put several beautiful hair styles out of reach due to lack of volume, then know that help is on the way. With Remy hair extensions (always prefer Indian virgin hair), you can add all the volume and bounce you want and attain a look that will seem oh-so-natural!

Clip-in Remy hair extensions

Undeniably, thin hair looks lifeless and every hair caught in the brush makes the situation even more frustrating. One of the best things you can do is wear clip-in extensions and add strands to your natural hair. If they have the same color and structure, rest assured it will all blend seamlessly with your own hair and give you the styling flexibility you are looking for.
Clip-ins are directly clipped into your hair with barrettes or slides and allow for a change of style in just minutes. The great thing about clip-ins is that they can be removed any time you wish and be fixed in your hair just as quickly. Plus, compared to semi-permanent hair extensions, they are less pricey.

Semi-permanent Remy hair extensions

More lasting solutions, such as semi-permanent hair extensions, are ideal for women that discover some bald spots due to hormonal imbalances or any other reason or those that just want something more than a temporary solution.

Hair thickening procedures use fewer strands than the hair lengthening procedures, although both involve bonding additional strands to your own hair. To cover any bald spots, the stylist uses netting and then weaves larger strands into the nest, before they are either clipped or bonded to the hair extensions.
At this point, the kind of hair extensions you use does not matter much, although Indian hair extensions are indeed superior options than anything else on the market right now (here’s how to choose the best Indian virgin hair extensions per case).

However, there are other methods used to add volume or length (Part 1), and you can also find them here.

How are Remy hair extensions bonded with natural hair?

Besides clip-in that is described above, the most commonly used methods are:

1. Ultrasound – The stylist fastens hair strands on very small keratin plates and the heats them very briefly. Then, the strands are bonded with your own hair using ultrasound, which allows them to form stable flat connections without the use of any chemicals or heat. Therefore, it is a particularly gentle method although quite work-intensive, which makes it costly.

2. Compressed Air/Laser Beam – This is probably the fastest bonding procedure and also one of the cheapest ones. It is a method where 8-10 strands of Remy hair are bonded to your own hair, all at the same time using either compressed air or laser.

3. Shrinkies/Bellargo – The stylist bonds the Remy hair extensions with your own hair inside very small pieces of tubing. Then, with the use of heat, these tubes shrink and bond with the natural hair. As you can understand, this method will leave you with quite bulky bonds but it is another gentle procedure that doesn’t damage your natural hair. That said, it is a process that you will need to repeat every 4-8 weeks, depending on your hair growth.

Note: Usually, hair extensions have to be refreshed after 3 months, no matter the method you choose. On average, you can keep your locks for up to 6 months. However, with proper care, you can prolong their lifespan to more than a year.
