Why do your tape-in extensions slip?

June 9, 2018

Tape in Remy hair extensions are a great if you want everyday glam, length, and volume. It is a semi-permanent method and the least expensive one in salons right now that is so lightweight and thin that you will forget you are wearing extensions. Plus, they are practically invisible and can be worn in a wide range of updos, braids, and high ponytails. Most tape-ins are designed to lat up to 12 weeks on average, and the only issue you may have with them is slippage. This can happen if the virgin hair extensions are not applied or maintained properly.

Although there are many reasons why tape-in extensions might slip, we present you the three most common ones, but we’ll probably have to go back and add some more with a new post soon!

1. You have had a chemical treatment the same day you applied your extensions

Same day treatment are not advised because tape-in Indian virgin hair extensions need to be applied to squeaky clean hair. For that reason, we recommend you only use a clarifying shampoo (no conditioner prior the application) on the roots before you apply the extensions. No chemical alterations (i.e. keratin) or coloring should be done on your own hair (the tape-ins while they are installed) or the tape-in extensions will slip within 5-7 days.
If you want to have a chemical process done, it’s best to have it about a week before application.

2. Product Buildup

Simply put, when your extensions get too much product buildup, the adhesive used to glue the extensions to the hair breaks down much faster than expected So, instead of having tape-ins that could last 12 weeks, you may end up having to replace them in 6-8 weeks. So, avoid using thermal sprays, hairsprays, dry shampoo and a toner for more intense color all at once.

Also, it should be noted that any product that contains oil, ethanol or alcohol can also make your tape-in virgin Remy hair extensions slip, but that’s not it. These products can also damage your extensions and even result in some serious tangling.

3. Poor Maintenance

Proper care of your extensions is key to have them for long looking gorgeous. With tape-ins that are so thin and lightweight, it is very easy to forget to give them the extra care they need and treat them like your own hair! In fact, tape-ins should be kept clean using products that contain no sulfates. Also, gently brush them (never when wet or in the shower) and don’t heat or chemically treat the tape bonds. Otherwise, chances are you will make them slip.

So, instead of spraying a dry shampoo on the bonds, douse the extensions with hair mask and repeat after a few days or when you remember it, it’s best to use the right products for your Remy hair extensions and make sure you maintain them correctly.

If, despite all that, your tape-ins have eventually slipped, just remove the old tape, add new one on clean weft and apply! As simple as that!
