3 More Things to Know Before you Get Hair Extensions (Part 2)

August 16, 2015

So, you have done your research, chose a method that works best with your own hair, and insisted in purchasing quality Remy hair than the cheaper options out there. You are almost done with knowing everything necessary before you get those luscious strands you’ve been longing for too long! The 3 final things you need to consider are:

1. Commit to a Regular Maintenance Routine

Your extensions will look lavishly long and fab when you leave the salon. To keep them like that for as long as possible, it’s important to know how to take care of them properly once you get home.

If you have chosen clip-ins, then you are lucky. To keep them in shape, you just remove them (super easy) and comb out tangles (always gently). Then, wash them with a paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo and finish treatment with a conditioner to moisturize. Remove excess water with a towel (just blot the extensions to dry) and let them air dry.

For tape-in and keratin-bonded strands, you’ll need to devote a bit more time. Again, wash the locks with paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo but focus on the roots this time. Use a conditioner from the mid-lengths and all the way to the ends. Do NOT pat with a towel to dry until the Remy hair is damp (almost dry). Then, you can use any heat styling tool you have to style. Just make sure the tool doesn’t get too near the tape or keratin bonds or it’ll damage them. And, never…ever…sleep on wet hair when wearing tape-ins or keratin-bonded extensions. Finally, to prevent tangles, braid it into pigtails before your head hits the pillow!

2. Listen to your Hair

Your hair speaks to you. If you feel any discomfort or pain after the stylist has put in the extensions you have chosen, then you should let them know. Once it’s in, you should normally not feel a thing. For clip-ins, you can try moving them slightly. Un-clip the section that’s causing pain and re-clip it, so it catches more of your natural hair.

Super Tip: One of the most common things that tell-tale you are wearing extensions is the color of the extensions. It’s critical to pick the right one for your hair. This means that if you match the Remy hair to the color at the END of your natural hair, you’ll get a perfectly seamless transition from the roots to the ends of your hair, and a great, natural look!

3. Know when it’s “What‘s Next?” Time!

Although we all love your Remy hair extensions and our gorgeous, new length, there comes a time when the extensions no longer fit the bill and need to be replaced. At this point, you can either let your hair rest for a while or just go with the next, voluminous style and new extensions. Fortunately, tape-ins and clip-ins can stay up 6-8 weeks and up to two years respectively, with proper care! As for keratin-bonded strands, you can wear them for up to three months. However, when it’s time to remove your extensions, it’s best to have a professional do it for you unless you wear easy-to-take-off clip-ins. In any other case, visit the salon where you got them pit and have them removed to avoid any damage to your own hair.
