Retro Multi Texture Style – Smooth And Curly

Retro Multi Texture Style - Smooth And CurlyStuck in a hair styling rut? Bored of wearing your hair down and straight every day? Retro is the way to add interest to your style in a few easy steps!

There is nothing more retro than the combination of textures. Think 1950’s pin curled ends with ultra smooth roots. You have smooth and delicate at the top and outrageous volume at the bottom.

That’s the inspiration for this style which can be achieved without having to mess around with pin curls. Here’s how to do it with a sew in weave.

You will need: 1 pack 14 inch and 1 pack 16 inch hair extensions in the color of your choice. Satin rollers and a few bobby pins or shiny hair clips.

  1. Install the weave with the 16 inch extensions at the bottom and the 14 inch at the top for a layered effect. This will make it easy to wear the hair straight as well as curly. Make sure that you leave out enough hair at the top and sides to create a deep side part.
  2. Apply some heat protectant to your leave out hair and flat iron it smooth to match the hair extensions.
  3. To style the hair, apply some styling mousse and brush the top of your hair down with a boar bristle brush.
  4. Roll sections of your hair up using large satin covered sponge rollers making sure to roll just the bottom half of your hair. You can use a bit of styling mousse on each section. With the top layers you will roll only about half way up the length of the strands stopping when the rollers are level with your ears. You want to keep the volume at the top down to a minimum.
  5. Wrap your hair up with a satin scarf or bonnet to sleep. Sponge rollers are pretty comfortable to sleep with!
  6. In the morning, take down the rollers and separate the curls to get some nice volume at the bottom.
  7. To avoid looking too 1950’s housewife, tease and mess up the curls even more to create even more volume. You don’t want to turn the curls into a bush but you want to give this retro style a more modern twist.
  8. Once you are happy with the way your hair looks, pull your hair behind your ears and secure with a few bobby pins or some shiny hair clips for added bling!
  9. Spray your hair with some hairspray to hold the style in place and you are good to go.

This video gives a demonstration of a similar style:

Unfortunately this style will not keep too well overnight. In the evening, comb out the curls and roll the hair again to wear the same look the following day.

You could also use a curling iron to create the curls in the morning and continue with styling as before. The only problem is that using heat every day is never a good idea for your own leave out hair or your hair extensions. So to avoid long term hair damage, heatless curls are the way to go.
