Quirky Hairstyle: Floppy Dutch Crown Braid

October 13, 2014

Floppy crown braid on blonde hairI’ve always had a quirky fashion sense. I mix and match things that probably have no business being together and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. With my hair though, I’ve always been pretty safe wearing it down either straight or curly and the occasional ponytail or bun. Every now and again however, I come across a hairstyle that as soon as I see I think, ‘I must try that!’.

I’m sure many people are in the same situation finding themselves in the boring hairstyle rut. Even among us weave wearing fashionistas, I see you tube videos of women installing hair extensions all the time only to wear them down curly or straight, yawn! I don’t see many of them experiment with hairstyles and I think that it’s a shame. You would be surprised with the mutitudes of ways to wear your hair if you just ventured out of your comfort zone a bit. Certainly some styles will be a massive fail on you but it’s those failures that make the successes so much sweeter!

Here is a quirky style for the daring among you. It’s based on a regular crown braid but much floppier to half cover your eyes. This style works best on medium to long hair. Here’s how to recreate it:

  1. This style is difficult to achieve on stick straight hair so either start with hair that has been recently curled (you can set your hair in rollers the night before for this) or texture your hair by applying some styling mousse to it before you begin braiding.
  2. Brush your hair in the direction that you want the braid to fall. Hair should be falling over your face and around your head.
  3. Starting with a piece of hair from near your ear and with a very loose hand begin to braid into a cornrow. You want the cornrow to be hanging low down your forehead like a bang. As you are braiding, tug on the braid to fan out and loosen it even further.
  4. Continue braiding and tugging until you come full circle with the cornrow reaching the ear from where  you started.
  5. Once you have no more hair to add to the cornrow, braid the rest of the hair all the way to the end and secure with an elastic band.
  6. Tuck the hanging end of the cornrow out of site underneath your crown braid and pin into place with bobby pins.
  7. Adjust the style by tugging slightly on the braid to get it to sit as low down your forehead as you wish. Don’t tug too hard because if you pull too much hair out, you will only be able to correct it by starting the cornrow again!
  8. Accessorize the style as you wish with shiny bobby pins or flower clips or nothing at all.

This style unfortunately will not keep too well overnight, because the braid will have loosened too much and it will not look as smooth as the day before. You can save the situation however by unravelling the braid and wearing the resulting beach waves as a curly hairdo. A two for the price of one hairstyle!
