Relaxing Your Leave Out Hair Before Installing A Weave

February 18, 2012

Tint brush and bowl with rat tail combIf  your hair is relaxed, weaving it is a great way to protect the majority of your hair from constant styling damage. Many ladies have grown their own hair long using weaves while still looking fabulous wearing undetectable weaves. The biggest reason why so may relaxed women experience breakage is because of relaxer damage caused by accidentally overlapping previously processed hair.

The solution to this is the practice of stretching the relaxer. Stretching is prolonging the time between relaxer treatments to 10+ weeks. This allows for enough new growth to be clearly visible which minimizes overlapping. Some ladies however may find it difficult to deal with the two textures of hair so opt for protective styling in the meantime. Weaving is an ideal way to wear your hair while stretching out the relaxer.

For a polished appearance, some ladies opt to retouch the leave out hair and edges more often than the rest of the hair. Retouching the leave out hair more often gives you the smooth edges you want without risking damage to all your hair. Great care must be taken still to ensure that you are not causing breakage to your leave out and that you are not aggravating traction alopecia by getting relaxer on your scalp.

You will need: A box relaxer of your choice, gloves, a tint brush.

1. Put on your gloves and start by separating the hair that you will be relaxing. Tie the rest of your hair in a ponytail out of the way.

2. Depending on the type of relaxer you use, separate in a plastic bowl an appropriate amount with your activator and stir thoroughly. Set your timer for the amount of time that you will be processing your hair. This is usually a maximum of 20 minutes but bear in mind that edges process much faster so it might be prudent to cut that time in half.

3. Using your tint brush, dip it into the relaxer mixture and carefully apply to just the new growth of your leave out hair. Use the pointed end of the color brush to part the hair and ensure that you get the relaxer applied evenly.

4. Apply the relaxer to the edges and smooth through with your gloved fingers. Be careful not the get any relaxer on the hair that has been tied up. If possible get someone to help you with the application.

5. Wash off the relaxer and neutralize with the neutralizing shampoo until the lather is white without any traces of pink.

6. Restore your hair’s pH balance by finishing off the rinse with a mixture of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 5 parts water. This will also neutralize any relaxer remnants in your hair and close the cuticles so that it is shinier and retains more moisture.

7. Spray your hair liberally with a protein restructurizer. Your hair loses plenty of cystein during the relaxing process and replacing it immedieately ensures that you keep the strength of your hair. Aphogee green tree restructurizer is a good one.

8. Braid your hair for the weave and style as usual.

Note: Never retouch the leave out hair while your hair is in a sew in, always take down the sew in first before any chemical service including coloring.
