Summer Vacation and Hair Extensions Do’s and Dont’s

September 5, 2015

Beach hat, bag, sunglasses and sandalsTropical summer vacations often mean extended hours in the sun and tons of swimming. If you are planning a vacation getaway to the Caribbean, Maui or Sunny Florida you might wonder how your extensions may fare with the exposure to the sun and all of the swimming activities you have on your agenda.

Here are the dos and don’ts of summer vacation hair extensions:

Do – buy high quality extensions when deciding to wear extensions on vacations. The cheaper the hair the easier it will be for it to get damaged. High quality human hair extensions can withstand some of the challenges of vacation activities.

Do swim – swimming whether in the ocean or the pool will not damage hair extensions when the proper precautions are made to prepare your hair as you would your natural hair.

Don’t – keep your hair extensions wet for long periods of time, while swimming for hours is great for a workout, it is not good when trying to preserve the quality of your installment. Keep hair extensions wet from root to tip for long periods of time will lead to slight shedding.  Being aware of the length of time you are immersed in water is highly recommended as anything longer than two hours can lead to dull lifeless hair.

Do – coat your hair with conditioner before entering the ocean or pool for added protection for the strands. Any conditioner will do, just make sure the hair is well coated so that the harsh chemicals in the pool or the salt in the ocean will not dry out the hair too much. Tip: Dilute some conditioner in a spray bottle, the bottle will help you to spread product evenly throughout the hair and you can always throw it in your beach bag just in case you missed a spot.

Don’t – hesitate to wear a swim cap when swimming for extended periods of time, the cap helps to protect the hair from both the sun and water and can save you some of the headache that extended exposure may bring

Do – wear hats, not only are hats important for protecting your skin from exposure to the sun but they also protect the extensions from the heat and direct rays of the sun.

Do – Wash your hair immediately after swimming, making sure all of the chlorine or salt water is out of your hair, condition and style as normal. Try using a sulfate free shampoo that won’t further strip the hair and cause dryness and will help restore moisture to the hair quickly.

Do – buy hair products that contain SPF to protect the hair from excessive exposure to the sun. There are a ton of products on the market that contain sunscreen and this added protection will only preserve the luster of your hair.

Don’t fall asleep with wet hair; this may cause mold and odor which is not cute. Ensure that the hair is completely dry before going to bed. Unfortunately on vacation this routine can prove to be rather hectic but it is an absolute must when trying to preserve the look of your extensions.
